What can the structures of Washington, D.C. tell you? If you look closely you will see that they are pieces of history and very much a part of the diverse fabric of the nation?s capital. And if you are quiet for just a moment you will realize that the stories go far beyond their vertical span. That's because buildings are as alive as those who design and function in them. While buildings once created waste, today everything from integrating natural sunlight to minimizing water runoff is seriously considered in all aspects of smart design.
On the Marshall Purnell Walking Tour you will discover that his buildings are very much living things and an integral part of their environment. At the same time you will see some of Marshall's best work and structures that hold architectural and historic significance in the Washington, D.C. area. The tour, which is approved by the Washington, D.C. Convention and Tourism Center, celebrates the 30-year anniversary of Devrouax & Purnell, as well as Marshall's induction as the 2008 president of the American Institute of Architects.
Don't follow history create it as you visit structures that have architectural significance to an African American architect, as well as those with historical significance in African-American history. Some of these buildings are currently under consideration to be included in Cultural Tourism D.C.'s African American Heritage Trail.
